WINDHAM, N.H. (AP) – A Florida man convicted of fondling a child eight years ago is under investigation in New Hampshire after a 15-year-old girl he met online ran away to try to meet him.

The girl was found in South Carolina on Tuesday, a day after she left her parents a note saying she was moving to the Boston area. Police believe she was on her way to meet Daniel Lenz, 26, of Jackson, Fla., who was convicted in 1999 of sexual battery against a minor.

Lenz was charged Tuesday night with being a felon in possession of a gun. He has not been charged with a crime in New Hampshire, but police are working on the case with the FBI.

Lenz met the girl online while playing “World of Warcraft,” a massive, role-playing game that allows members to play other members from around the world, police said.

Windham police Chief Gerald Lewis said the girl was being home-schooled and had cut off all interaction with her friends in the area.

“Her only contacts outside the home were with an online group of computer users,” Lewis said.

The girl’s mother found the note Monday when she returned home from running an errand. The teenager had mentioned to her mother once that she had met a 26-year-old Florida man named Daniel online, which helped police identify Lenz.

The girl was with a 23-year-old Florida man when she was found. Police believe he was driving the girl south at Lenz’s request.

Lewis said police believe Lenz instructed the other man to make sure the girl left behind her cell phone but took her computer so authorities couldn’t trace her disappearance to him. The girl took a suitcase, a parakeet and two flying squirrels.

Lenz told police he lived by himself but refused to answer questions about the missing girl, according to police.
