DANBURY, Conn. – Southern Maine rolled past Western Connecticut State by sweeping a baseball doubleheader Saturday, 7-4, 7-5 to extend its winning streak to four games.
The Huskies (8-2) received home runs from Eddie Skeffington, Ryan Bourque and Joe McGhee. Max Alexander cleared the bases with a 3-run double in the opener.
Starting pitcher Chris Burleson picked up the win in the opener, while reliever Tom Therrian struck out six batters over the final three innings to earn the victory in Game 2.
Tufts 10-16, Bates 2-2
MEDFORD, Mass. – Derek Rice and Jason Protano each turned in complete-game efforts as Tufts pounded Bates in a doubleheader baseball sweep Saturday, 10-2 and 16-2.
Bryan McDavitt smacked a bases-clearing triple in a seven-run sixth inning to help Rice (3-0) in the opener. Corey Pontes added a home run. Griffin Finan (1-1) suffered the loss.
In the nightcap, McDavitt stroked a two-run double and Steve Ragonese hit a two-run homer as the Jumbos (10-4) touched Bates’ starter Chuck Murphy-Romboletti for six runs in the first two innings.
Softball
Maine 3-0, UMBC 1-7
BALTIMORE, Md. – Kirsten Calvetti’s three-run home run in the top of the 13th inning lifted Maine to a 3-1 win over the University of Maryland at Baltimore County in the first game of a softball doubleheader Saturday. UMBC won the nightcap 7-0 to salvage a split.
Bates 4-0, Tufts 1-11
MEDFORD, Mass. – Kristin Masino tossed a three-hitter as Bates split a doubleheader with Tufts. The Bobcats took the first game 4-1, while Tufts cruised to an 11-0 win in the second.
Katie Franklin had a pair of RBI singles to stake the Bobcats (3-6) to a 2-0 lead after two innings in the first game. Jill Cappucci added a solo homer to back Masino (2-3). Lauren Gelmetti (2-36) was tagged with the loss.
RIC 8-10, USM 0-2
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Kristyn Alexander rapped out four hits and drove in six runs to launch Rhode Island College to a twinbill sweep of Southern Maine, 8-0 and 10-2.
UNE 1-3, Nichols 2-1
DUDLEY, Mass. – Sarah Hamel tossed a four-hitter and struck out nine to help the University of New England defeat Nichols College 3-1 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday. Nichols won the opener 2-1.
Katie Morin went 3-for-3 for the Nor’easters.
St. Joe’s 2-9, Husson 1-8
STANDISH – Gabrielle Burrola had a day to remember for St. Joseph’s. She tossed a four-hitter for a 2-1 win over Husson in the opening game and belted two doubles, drove in four runs and collected a save in a 9-8 victory in the nightcap.
Burrola (3-5) fanned 13 in the first game as the Monks (5-9) touched Ashlee Paschal for a tie-breaking run in the bottom of the sixth.
Women’s lacrosse
Williams 14, Bates 9
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Elizabeth Pierce scored seven goals as Williams downed Bates 14-9 in women’s lacrosse.
The Ephs (3-1 overall) scored four unanswered goals to start the second half.
Morgan Maciewicz netted three goals for the Bobcats (5-3) with Caroline Thomas and Katelyn Draked adding a pair.
Men’s lacrosse
Williams 12, Bates 10
LEWISTON – Dixon Hargrove and Michael Vrla each scored four times as Williams outlasted Bates 12-10 in men’s lacrosse Saturday.
Matt Erisman had four goals for the Bobcats (3-2). Brent Morin added three. Peter Boston and Will Paddock combined for 11 saves in the loss.
