JAY – Town and school officials are now looking at a June 12 town meeting, more than a month later than the original April 23 referendum date.

The town meeting date had to be changed a couple of times when the state couldn’t provide projected education assistance funding figures on time.

Town Manager Ruth Marden said officials have planned the town meeting for Tuesday, June 12, and she has written to state officials asking them not to change the proposed statewide bond vote, which is also planned for that date.

She has heard some discussion of the state postponing the bond voting to the following Tuesday on June 19.

Jay Superintendent Robert Wall said the School Committee is scheduled to take up a nearly $9.9 million budget and subsequent warrant articles at the board’s 6 p.m. Thursday, April 5, regular meeting at the middle school cafeteria.

A public hearing on the town and school warrant articles will be set soon.

School leaders have also scheduled a public meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at the middle school to discuss school district consolidation.

People will have a chance to hear information on consolidation proposals and the committee will have a chance to get input from the public to help guide them in the process, Wall said.

State leaders are dictating that school systems consolidate to save money.

Wall said consolidation is on a fast track and the date now on the table to go into effect is July 1, 2008.
