NORTH TURNER – Even if it isn’t quite warm enough to think about planting dahlias yet, here is a chance to get off to an early start.
Dahlia Days is a new event being planned by the North Turner Presbyterian Church just in time for Mother’s Day. The event is planned to help both those who have dahlia bulbs and those who don’t or would like to expand their collection. It will work like a craft fair, but will feature dahlia bulbs as well as cannas and calla lilies.
Anyone who grows dahlias knows that each spring you plant one and each fall you dig eight to a dozen. It only takes a few years before you run out of space to store the bulbs or ground in which to plant them. So for anyone who has an excess, here is a chance to get a table and sell a few or to trade for some new ones.
For those who want to start planting dahlias or are always on the lookout for new ones and don’t want to pay catalogue prices, this will be a chance to buy a variety and not invest a lot to try a hand at a wonderful plant for the garden and to cut for the house.
The event is planned for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the GAR Hall, Route 219. Jody Goodwin, known as “The Happy Gardener” for her long-running gardening column in the Lewiston Sun Journal, will be on hand throughout the event to answer questions on growing dahlias, and there will be refreshments for sale.
There are a limited number of tables available, so anyone wishing to sell bulbs at the event is asked to call 225-2020 before Wednesday, April 25, for information and a table reservation.
There will be no charge to attend but free will donations for the church will be welcome.
