California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation authorizing $250 million in state money to underwrite the 2016 summer Olympics if Los Angeles is picked as the host city. Arnold endorsed the bill on the condition that the theme of the opening ceremonies be “Jingle All the Way: Christmas in July.”

Millions in Japan tuned in at 8 a.m. to watch Daisuke Matsuzaka make his Fenway debut yesterday, throwing his first pitch to Ichiro Suzuki. I used to get up at 3 a.m. to watch great Japanese athletes, too, but that was a long time ago, when Mr. Fuji and Prof. Toru Tananka dominated the WWF.
