CARTHAGE – New England Celtic Arts will host veteran Canadian singer-songwriter Buddy MacDonald at Skye Theater Thursday, April 19.
MacDonald’s career as an entertainer began 30 years ago. Born and brought up on the northern shores of Cape Breton Island, he was exposed at an early age to the singing and storytelling of some of the great Celtic singers of his native island. Much of his songwriting is still influenced by this style.
Over the years, he has traveled and entertained audiences throughout Canada, the United States, Germany, Scotland and the Scandinavian countries, performing as a solo act and in different combinations with other musicians from Cape Breton.
He has performed on stage with many of eastern Canada’s traditional artists: Natalie MacMaster, Howie MacDonald, Ashley MacIssac, Dave MacIssac, John Allan Cameron.
Since Celtic Colours International Festival began 10 years ago, MacDonald has been host of the late night Festival Club and has performed over various parts of the island with Scotland’s Dougie MacLean, Archie Fisher, Ireland’s Tommy Makem, Michael Black, and other artists from all over the world.
MacDonald’s songs, along with his own recordings, have been performed and recorded by artists throughout the country. His material has been recorded by such artists as John Allan Cameron, McGinty and Dave Gunning. He continues to tour.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. Call New England Celtic Arts at (207) 562-4445 for reservations and directions. Skye Theater is at 2 Highland Drive off Winter Hill Road and US Route 2. More info is available online at www.necelticarts.com.
