NEW YORK – Tom Glavine emerged from the oldest matchup of left-handed starters in major league history with his 292nd win.

Other than a pair of Jimmy Rollins homers, Glavine pretty much shut down the Phillies in a 5-3 victory over Philadelphia and Jamie Moyer on Thursday night.

Jose Reyes hit a two-run, fourth-inning single that turned a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 lead, and Moises Alou had three hits.

Glavine (2-1) allowed three runs and four hits, struck out four, walked three and helped out with two important sacrifices. The defending NL East champion Mets took two of three in their first series against Philadelphia, which finished second last year and is looking for bigger things this season.

Alou scored in the second inning when third baseman Wes Helms threw wildly to first on Glavine’s bunt down the line. Glavine’s second sacrifice advanced runners to second and third in the fourth, and Reyes followed with his go-ahead hit,

Moyer and Glavine hooked up in the oldest matchup of lefty starters (85 years, 163 days) in major league history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Yankees’ Tommy John and White Sox pitcher Jerry Reuss on May 2, 1988, were the previous record holders (83 years, 299 days).

Nationals 2, Braves 0

ATLANTA – The Washington Nationals took a lead during a game – and won it, too.

Ronnie Belliard hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning off John Smoltz, and Washington beat the Atlanta Braves 2-0 Thursday night to stop a six-game losing streak.

Ryan Zimmerman also hit an RBI single for the Nationals (2-8), who had never before led a game this year at the time a pitch was thrown. Their only previous win was April 4, when Dmitri Young hit a game-ending single that capped a three-run ninth inning in a 7-6 victory over visiting Florida.Washington has been outscored 61-23 this season and hasn’t scored during the first three innings of any game.

Orioles 2, Royals 1

BALTIMORE – Jay Gibbons atoned for an earlier missed opportunity by driving in Brian Roberts with two outs in the 10th inning, giving the Baltimore Orioles a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Gibbons, who fouled out with two runners on base in the eighth, lined an opposite-field single to left with the bases loaded in the 10th off Jason Standridge (0-1).

Indians 4, Angels 2

MILWAUKEE – Travis Hafner’s three-run homer in the eighth inning powered the Cleveland Indians to a 4-2 comeback victory over the Los Angeles Angels at Miller Park in the finale of a series that was moved from Cleveland to Milwaukee after snow wiped out the Indians’ four-game series against the Seattle Mariners.

The Indians return to Cleveland for what should be their true home opener against the Chicago White Sox on Friday night, but they might get another chilly reception. The weekend weather forecast in Cleveland calls for a mixture of rain and snow with high temperatures in the low 40s.

Tigers 5, Blue Jays 4

TORONTO – Brandon Inge homered and drove in three runs, and Mike Maroth limited Toronto to two runs in six innings to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Blue Jays 5-4 for their fifth win in six games.

Inge hit a solo home run in the third, singled in a run in Detroit’s three-run fourth and added a sacrifice fly in the sixth. He finished 2-for-3.

Maroth (2-0) was limited to 13 games last season because of arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips from his left elbow. The 29-year-old left-hander allowed two runs on nine hits over six innings.

Twins 3, Devil Rays 2

MINNEAPOLIS – Justin Morneau led off the ninth inning with a home run off Brian Stokes to lift the Minnesota Twins over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 3-2.

After the Devil Rays committed a baserunning blunder that squashed a potential rally in the top of the inning, Morneau lofted a 1-2 pitch from Stokes (0-2) into the first row of left-field stands, just over the outstretched glove of Carl Crawford.

Devil Rays starter Casey Fossum allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings, falling behind on Michael Cuddyer’s two-run homer in the fourth. Carlos Silva pitched 6 2-3 scoreless innings for the Twins.
