Fredericton, N.B. – Complaints that the waters of the Allagash River in Maine are being diverted from the St. John River, of which it is a tributary to the Penobscot River, shortly will be laid before the International Boundary Waterways Commission.

• Last evening in Lewiston, police arrested on suspicion four men whom it is thought are connected with a Bunco game worked here last Friday in which a young man lost $80. The men had been in the city since Thursday and were watched all day Friday; and when the right time came, all four were taken to the station. It is thought that they may be wanted in some other cities, and City Marshal Cailler was in communication with some departments late last night.

50 years ago, 1957

• The possibility that Auburn’s new high school may operate under a name different than that by which it is now known was voiced yesterday by Auburn City Manager Bernal B. Allan. There has been some discussion in Auburn that for sentimental reasons, many would prefer to have the new structure also be known as Edward Little High School.

• A long-range navy antisubmarine patrol bomber fell and burst into fire on a takeoff from its Brunswick Air Station today. All six crew members died in the violent crash into woods just beyond the runway.

25 years ago, 1982

• An “innovative and unique” postal service became available at the Auburn Mall Monday, allowing area residents to rent post office boxes in a location other than a post office. It is only the second time the concept of locating locked post office boxes within a private enterprise has been tried in Maine.

• Following confusion over the announcement of plans to install a $3.2-million synthetic fuels plant in West Bowdoin or Durham, a representative of a Louisiana-based venture capital firm said Monday that his company will be contacting area officials to explain the facility.
