AUBURN – One man suffered a bullet wound to the shoulder and another was under suspicion after an early morning shooting in an apartment on Spring Street.

Police said 24-year-old Christopher White of Auburn, was shot at about 1:45 a.m. and that he later made his way to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Later Thursday morning, police identified the shooter as 21-year-old Zachary Corneau, described as an acquaintance of White’s.

It remained unclear later in the day how White was shot. No charges were filed, but police said they will forward their findings to the District Attorney’s office.

Police interviewed White and Corneau as well as others who were in the second-floor apartment at 168 Summer St. when White was shot.

“There were witnesses,” said deputy police Chief Jason Moen.

Moments after the shot was fired, an occupant of the apartment called police to say a man had been struck and that he had left the building.

Police said White left the apartment but later went to CMMC where he was admitted with a wound described as non-life threatening.

A nursing supervisor at the hospital said she could not confirm or deny that White was a patient there. Such a response typically applies to a patient who does not want information about his condition released.
