HEBRON – Improving upon last year’s second place finish, the Hebron Academy Math Team placed first in Division D in this year’s Maine Math Meet held April 8 at the Bangor Auditorium.
The meet is the largest competitive high school gathering in the state, academic or athletic, involving some 1,300 students. It consists of a series of six rounds of individual questions, followed by a relay race in which teams work to compile a cumulative score.
Members of this year’s Hebron team were Michael Simms of Auburn, Silas Leavitt of Gray, Rosa Van Wie of New Gloucester, Albert Hsu of Taiwan and Hong Bum Lee, Tae Hoh Park, Ji-Yun Seo, Joo Won Jun, Joon Sung Lee and Ho In Na, all of Korea.
In its division, Hebron bested second-place finisher St. Dominic Regional High School by a score of 473 to 350.
Individual standouts included freshman Ho In Na, who placed 11th overall and third among freshmen. Sophomore Joon Sung Lee finished 23rd overall, fifth among sophomores. Both students will represent Maine later this year in a national competition organized by the American Regions Math League and held at Pennsylvania State University.
Hebron math teachers and team advisers Merry Shore and Denis Shubleka, both graduates of Colby College, accompanied the team to the daylong event. “I’m very proud of them,” said Shore. “They worked hard.”
