EUSTIS – A Eustis woman is being held on $10,000 cash bail at a Farmington jail, accused of intentionally setting fire to the mobile home she was renting.

Donna Reid, 44, was arrested on a charge of arson at 9 a.m. Wednesday, State Fire Marshal Sgt. Joel Davis said.

She is expected to appear today in 12th District Court in Farmington.

Some cats, believed to be a mother and her kittens, perished in the fire, which was reported at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday at 570 Canadian Road, which is also Route 27, Davis said.

State fire investigators determined the cause of the fire, which destroyed the trailer and its addition, was caused by an intentional human element, Davis said.

The fire’s origin was in the kitchen along a wall, he said.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and Maine State Police assisted state fire investigators.

Firefighters from Eustis and Carrabassett Valley fought the blaze.

About 15 firefighters from Eustis and Carrabassett Valley, along with two engines and two tankers, responded to fight the fire.

The blaze was initially reported as an explosion after the roof collapsed and popped the windows out and blew the sides of the trailer out, Eustis assistant fire Chief Sid Shane said.

When Eustis fire Chief Rusty Fearon arrived, Shane said, the home was fully engulfed and the roof had already collapsed.

Firefighters did what they could to put the fire out and waited until state fire investigators arrived before they used an excavator to extinguish remaining hot spots, Shane said.

No one was injured, he said.

Billy O’Neill, who also resided at the residence, was in Nantucket working, when the fire started, Shane said.

The owner had insurance on the property but the renters didn’t have renters’ insurance, he said.

The mobile home was owned by Kandi Henderson of Wyman Township, Davis said.
