LEWISTON – A rally is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday in front of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ office on Lisbon Street, according to organizer and self-described political activist Jon Svitavsky.
The demonstration, according to Svitavsky, is being held to protest Collins’ recent vote against the supplemental spending bill passed by the Senate on March 29, providing funding for troops and setting a timetable for U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.
Svitavsky said he hopes the action will help to “encourage the senator to reassess her position … and hopefully then vote to provide the funding American troops need and finally set a flexible timetable for our troop withdrawal.”
Protesters, he said, will be supporting the position that a timeline would not worsen the situation in Iraq, but would be an incentive for the Iraqi government to take responsibility for itself.
Svitavzky says protesters will be gathering at 10 a.m. in Kennedy Park and walking to Collins’ office on Lisbon Street where the demonstration will take place. As part the protest, Svitavsky plans to deliver a letter to the senator, asking her to take steps more consistent with her stated positions on Iraq over the last six months.
Participants are welcome, Svitavsky said. For more information, contact Jon Svitavsky at 782-6780.
