The baseball season in the two cities started up Friday afternoon with the game between Lewiston and Edward Little high schools. A large crowd of supporters of both schools and baseball fans of the two cities were present. The game was a close one for the first one of the season and showed a good article of baseball.

At least 750 people attended the game and enjoyed it as much as the cold, raw wind would permit. The grandstand was fairly well filled with the young ladies of the schools. They showed more school spirit than the boys and made the stand shake at times with the school yells.

50 years ago, 1957

• Vacation-travel officials are looking for another record year in Maine, Everett F. Greaton of Auburn, state recreation director, reported yesterday. Greaton cited increased interest in vacation-travel, improved highways and a growing number of automobiles in an expanding population as factors responsible for more tourist interest in Maine advertising.

• The lowest March precipitation mark in more than 10 years was recorded in Lewiston last month. March’s mark was 1.68 inches and nearly half of it, 0.83 inches, came in a single storm March 9. The month’s total is far short of the all-time low of 0.17 inches in 1915.

25 years ago, 1982

ROCKPORT – Andre the seal arrived home Monday, completing his 235-mile “swim for peace” from Provincetown, Mass., in just under six days.

• President Reagan has issued a letter encouraging all Americans to join with Realtors across the country in the observance of Private Property Week, April 18 to 24, Julio S. Laguarta, president of the National Association of Realtors, announced today.

• Automobile tires studded with metal spikes or wires are not as popular as they were some years back, but in another week they will be still less welcome. By law, such winter tires may not be used after April 30.
