MINOT – With estimates of damage from last week’s nor’easter at $120,000 and climbing, Road Manager Arlan Saunders Monday night told selectmen that this year’s road budget is in jeopardy.

“We’re preparing estimates for FEMA, but if federal money doesn’t materialize, we’ll be in big trouble,” Saunders said.

He said his crew repaired a good portion of the washouts that occurred all across town. Hard hit were Millett Road, which was closed for a period, as was Death Valley Road, and Indian Brook overran Shaw Hill Road, where a driver, ignoring barricades, tried to cross and went off the road and in up to his windshield. Work, he said, continues on Brighton Hill Road and elsewhere in the northern section of town.

Saunders said the culvert on Ball Field Road went out and has been replaced but the 24-inch culvert on Hersey Hill Road that collapsed will have to wait until Thursday, when the Dig Safe permit comes through.

“I’ve already spent of $20,000 in gravel and there’s a substantial amount of paving that needs to be replaced,” added Saunders.

Saunders also noted that his office in the basement of the town office was not spared. His computer, while it was wet, appears to be functioning properly.

“The Town Office elevator shaft was flooded. I pumped out the shaft and Stanley (Elevator Co.) inspected the elevator today and it’s back in service. We should look into installing a sump pump,” said Saunders.

Selectmen agreed.

Fire Chief Steve French said the firetrucks were out during and after the storm and the men were busy placing traffic cones and barricades as well as removing fallen trees. French also said an emergency generator was connected and ready to serve the Central Fire Station and Town Office, but was not needed.
