Washington, D.C. – The National Rifle Association of America has taken up the introduction of rifle shooting in universities, colleges, academies and schools. An opportunity will be given to organize clubs in all institutions of learning. These rifle clubs will be divided into two classes, one composed of students in universities, colleges and institutions conferring degrees, and the other of students attending public schools, academies, preparatory and private schools. It is proposed that these clubs shall practice indoors as well as outdoors, and a code has been adopted for qualifications under both conditions.

GREENVILLE – Ice still covers virtually all of Moosehead Lake, Maine’s biggest lake and one of its finest sports fishing areas. According to the Maine Fish and Game Department, there is some fishing water at the mouths of the Moose and Roach rivers as well as the east and west outlets of the Kennebec River. Wardens do not expect ice out before the first of the week.

BANGOR – An epidemic of book-banning in Maine demands federal court action, the Maine Civil Liberties Union said. MCLU lawyer Ronald Coles urged U.S. District Judge Conrad Cyr to grant a motion to permanently bar the school committee from restricting access to Dr. Ronald Glasser’s celebrated account of Vietnam War veterans, “365 Days.”

YARMOUTH – CMP says about 1 million pink salmon are being put in ocean waters at the Wyman station as part of an experiment to introduce several salmon species from the Pacific Ocean into the Atlantic. The project is being conducted by Phillip and Evelyn Sawyer of Sea Run Inc. of Arundel.
