FARMINGTON – A proposal to share services for a central office position with SAD 58 was discussed at Tuesday’s SAD 9 Board of Directors meeting.

The proposal suggested sharing a payroll and accounts receivable position with SAD 58 rather than filling the position in the central office vacated by the retirement of Linda Dwinal. If SAD 58 board members accept the proposal, a savings of around $24,000 could be realized, board Chairman Ray Glass said Wednesday.

“This is another example of some good voluntary consolidation as the head position of the computer and technology program is also one shared with SAD 58,” he said.

The proposal, Glass said, will be reviewed at the next SAD 58 meeting tonight which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Mt. Abram High School.

In other business, the board suspended a freshman student after a disciplinary hearing. The student was suspended for the rest of the year, Glass said, due to a series of repeated failures to comply with school rules and consumption of alcohol. The student came to school intoxicated, he said.

The board chose Stephen Blatt and Associates from Auburn as the architect for the Mallett School building project.

Two long-term teacher retirements were discussed. Sylvia Yeaton from Cape Cod Hill School in New Sharon and Chris Cook, family and consumer science teacher at Mt. Blue High School, have both submitted their intentions to retire at the end of the school year.

The board also accepted a field trip request for the senior class’ overnight trip to Sunday River on June 6-7. A variety of organized activities planned at Sunday River was presented to the board, Glass said.

The rest of the meeting was spent working on the budget, he said. This was an initial presentation of components of the budget. The board covered the special education, buildings and transportation parts Tuesday. After this overview, he said, the board will meet again at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at the high school to review each specific area.

The critical new part of the budget was reviewed at the last meeting when the board voted to eliminate two elementary teacher positions, one at Mallett School and one at Cape Cod Hill School, due to declining enrollment.

The date for a hearing to present the budget is targeted for the end of May with a budget vote tentatively set for June 12, he said.
