LIVERMORE FALLS – About 45 firefighters from three towns responded Thursday night to Pallet-One Inc. to stop a blaze from a welding spark from spreading, Fire Chief Ken Jones said.

The Route 133 business is known locally as Isaacson Lumber.

The call came in as a possible fire in the back of the pallet manufacturing plant at 9:41 p.m.

When he arrived, he said, he saw it was a structure fire and called for mutual aid from Jay and Livermore.

Jones said there was a light smoke and small fires showing in three or four areas on the top of two metal buildings, known as the slasher area where logs are cut.

The sprinkler system was activated and that’s why the light smoke was showing, he said.

Firefighters got into buildings and were able to knock down the fire, he said, and continued to work putting out hot spots.

The fire started as maintenance workers were welding a kicker-arm on the conveyor system that moves the logs in and out.

Due to a buildup of sawdust, it caught fire immediately and then hit some hydraulic fluid in the area and took off, he said.

The workers, including a person assigned to watch for fire during the welding operation, tried to put the fire out, but did not succeed, Jones said.

Besides fire damage, there was electrical and hydraulic damage, he said.

“No one was injured,” he said.
