BATH – There will be a fleet of warships in the harbor during the Bath shipbuilding tercentennial celebration, which will be held during the week of August 5.

Big clam bakes at Popham Beach, where the ship Virginia, the first ever built in the new world, was constructed, big parades, military reviews, a reception to all the governors of New England, and other events have been arranged for.

The Kennebec Yacht Club will assist in conducting a big sailing regatta on the Kennebec river, and will entertain the Augusta Yacht Club and other yachting organizations .

50 years ago, 1957

PORTLAND – Portland, the most used test market in the 75,000 to 100,000 population group, the second largest such test area in New England and the sixth most used area in the country reports: The number of working wives is increasing; black coffee seems to be on the way out; dog ownership is at an all-time high; home permanents are a failing item and 21 per cent of the local residents own a power mower.

• Lewiston’s hubcap thieves have diversified their activities a bit. Richard Lussiere of 810 Lisbon St. told Lewiston police yesterday they not only stole two hubcaps from his 1953 Cadillac the other night, but also left with two fender skirts. He valued the hubcaps at $15 each, the fender skirts at $35 apiece.

25 years ago, 1982

• Two Auburn men were arrested by Lewiston police in connection with the theft of about 2,500 five-pound blocks of “give-away” cheese reportedly stolen from a warehouse in Lewiston Saturday night.

• Those blue fiberglass sidewalk canopies in front of S.S. Kresge’s on Lisbon Street that have aroused much controversy since they were put up two weeks ago, won’t be joined by others.

• Bath Iron Works abruptly announced Thursday that it was ceasing all work on planned expansions into Portland, citing legal questions by Maine Common Cause’s constitutional challenge of state financing for the project.
