AUBURN – An Auburn man who drove his car into a Court Street apartment building Sunday morning could not recall how the crash occurred.
According to police Sgt. James Robicheau, Louis Morneau, 57, of 63 Clover Lane, either blacked out or fell asleep at the wheel of his 2006 Volkswagen when he veered off the road at 8:48 a.m.
“Witnesses said he just sort of drifted off the road,” Robicheau said. “When we asked the driver what happened, he couldn’t tell us.”
Robicheau said that tenants of the 274 Court St. multi-family building reported feeling the house shake at the time of the collision.
The car smashed into the front porch, but did not break through into the building, Robicheau said.
Neither Morneau nor his wife, Sherry, 56, appeared to be seriously injured, but Robicheau said both were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for observation.
A spokesperson for the hospital could not confirm or deny that the two were patients there.
Robicheau said Morneau’s car was a total loss. Damage to the apartment building was estimated at $15,000.
