• Local people who enjoy canoeing are interested in the new style canoe which is equipped with air chambers and is said to be “perfectly safe,” because it can’t be tipped over in the water. This new style craft paddles as easily and sits in the water as gracefully as the tipable kind, say those who have investigated. It is probable that this new style canoe will be seen at Lake Auburn and at Sabattus Pond this summer.

• According to the Portland weather bureau, the month of April just ended was the coldest April on record with but one exception, that being in 1874 when the mean temperature fell to 36.4 degrees.

NEW YORK – United States Steel Corp. today reported the highest earnings for any quarter in its history.

• The month of April ends today after failing to live up to its designation as the month of showers. The preceding 30 days produced only 1.91 inches of precipitation, nearly 2 inches below normal. It continued a dry spell which started in December and which left Maine nearly 10 inches behind the normal amount of rainfall.

NEW YORK – There just isn’t enough evidence to claim that cigarettes cause lung cancer, Dr. Clarence C. Little, chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Tobacco Industry Research Committee, said today.

WASHINGTON – The United States lined up squarely with Great Britain on Friday in the Falkland Islands crisis, offering to help supply British forces while suspending economic and military aid to Argentina for what President Reagan called its “armed aggression.”

• Auburn has designed a City Government Speakers Bureau to “bring your city government closer to you.” Currently, City Manager Charles A. Morrison estimated, the city is called on to provide speakers for schools, service clubs and other organizations. He hopes, though, that a new five-page booklet detailing the specific lectures available will increase the demand.
