How can you travel the world of food without leaving your own country? This year Hebron Academy hosted its first International Dinner, sponsored by the Academy’s international students. The story begins with International Program director, Sarah Bryan, and student organizer, Tae Hoh Park, from Korea, who worked with students to plan, shop, and cook for this special event. This year, Hebron Academy has students from Brazil, China, Canada, Germany, Japan, Korea, Sweden, Mexico, Taiwan, Ukraine, and Spain. The goal of International Night is to give international students the opportunity to share their cultures and to open a window for discussion and cultural exchange. The evening of great food and conversation widened the horizons of the Hebron community.

International food has much flavor and variety. Cooks take advantage of a wide range and combination of ingredients which may be unfamiliar to American students. Approaching the dining hall the night of the dinner, one could smell wonderful aromas even before entering the building. Students presented their food in unique and creative ways. Our international chefs prepared such savory treats as dumplings, friend rice, Korean barbecue, Japanese sushi. German, Spanish, and South American pasta were popular, as were Canadian cheese curds and French fries with gravy. Brazilian pudding disappeared as soon as it was displayed. According to Rachel Cooper from Ashland, Massachusetts, “International Night was amazing. It was a great way to incorporate the cultures of international students with that of the Americans. In addition to this, the FOOD WAS SPECTACULAR. A job well done!” David Delgado of Atlantic, Iowa adds, “I enjoyed the dinner very much.” Mrs. Donna Inglehart, an English teacher, said that the dinner was one of the best events she’s attended at Hebron. “Ms. Bryan and the students worked very hard to make this happen. It was a genuine celebration of Hebron’s cultural diversity.” Maria Peral from Spain added that she really liked participating in the international dinner and that the food was “incredible.” Next year, she would like to include music and games from each of the countries. International Night will become a Hebron Academy tradition. Next year’s event is already beckoning us!
