The Lisbon Music Department’s band and choral students from grades 5-12 will be going to Washington D.C. on June 13-16, 2007 (Flag Day week) to participate in the culmination of the National Anthem Project. One may ask “What is the National Anthem Project?” According to a recent Harris poll only three percent of graduating high school seniors can accurately sing or play our National Anthem. As a result, the National Anthem Project was created as a collaborative initiative of the President’s office. The project led by Laura Bush initiated a partnership with the National Association of Music Education to ensure that all graduating high school students across America can accurately sing our National Anthem.

The highpoint of this project is a Washington D.C. musical salute where the unveiling of a restored Fort McHenry Old Glory will take place. Lisbon students, together with students from schools all across the country, will be singing and playing the National Anthem for the President and other dignitaries at this prestigious event. The students of the Lisbon school performing ensembles are the official representatives for the state of Maine at this ceremony.

“This concert tour is a once in a lifetime musical opportunity for our students,” shares Jonathan Carsley, one of the Music Directors at the Lisbon Schools. “The cost of $500 per person for students, adult chaperones, nurses, etc., it is not cheap, with a total estimated cost of nearly $100,000,” according to Carsley. During the past year, the Lisbon Music Boosters Association has provided resources and funds, by sponsoring multiple student fundraisers. A number of local corporate donations assisted with the organizing, planning and costs for this tour. During the four day trip to our nation’s capital, Lisbon students will be showcasing their talent, performing at the World War II Memorial and the Sullivan Theatre. In addition, as part of the package, the tour will include visits to the Smithsonian Museums, the National Zoo and Arlington Cemetery.
