BRUNSWICK – Police have identified the U.S. Navy man killed in a car crash earlier this week as Michael Allen Barger, 22, of 1001 Hallowell Road in Durham.
Barger was the front-seat passenger in a 2006 Toyota sedan that hit a utility pole and several trees before landing on its side near the intersection of Durham and Hacker roads Sunday night. He died at the scene.
The driver, Corey J. Christensen, 21, and another passenger, Terrence Wilkerson, 20, were treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released.
The three men, all stationed at Brunswick Naval Air Station, were roommates who served as members of a P-3 Orion squadron, according to John James, a spokesman for BNAS.
He said all three were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
The cause of the accident was still under investigation Thursday.
Police are testing the blood of the driver and the deceased for alcohol content, Brunswick police Commander Rick Desjardins said.
The speed limit in that area is 35 mph, he said. The car was destroyed.
