This is in response to the April 28 editorial about the Auburn City Council/School Committee dispute. I agree with the editorialist’s view. However, the paragraph about Gov. John Baldacci’s aim to reduce school administration hits a sore spot with me.
As I understand it, under a proposed consolidation plan, Monmouth Academy will cease to exist as a “high school,” but would likely be used as an area middle school or such. That would mean that high school-age Monmouth students would be transported to some other nearby high school facility.
Monmouth Academy has had a reputation, for many years, as one of the top public high schools in Maine scholastically. Numerous families move to Monmouth because of its school system. It would be a shame to water down that reputation by sending high school students to some other nearby school.
