FARMINGTON – On Wednesday, May 9, starting at noon, the Mt. Blue Voices and the Mt. Blue Middle School Show Choir will perform in Nordica Auditorium on the University of Maine at Farmington campus.
Still glowing from their triumph at the State Vocal Jazz Festival, the Mt. Blue Middle School Show Choir will perform selections from the Broadway musical “Wicked.” Their act features singing and choreography, with soloists Marina West, Louisa Stancioff, Matt West, and Andreas Wyder, and a chorus of 16 other seventh- and eighth-graders, directed by MBMS music teacher Jim Perkins.
At the state competition in March, the show choir competed against the state’s larger middle schools and won second place. In addition, individual group members won Best Female Vocalist and Best Male Vocalist awards.
The Mt. Blue Voices, renowned a cappella ensemble from Mount Blue High School, will perform a mix of pop numbers from the ’60s to the present, including such favorites as “Downtown,” “Walk on By,” “You’re No Good,” “Yesterday,” “No Time,” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”
The 15-member Mt. Blue Voices is directed by Dennis Hayes, retired music director for SAD 9. Hayes, who arranges much of the group’s music, also encourages musical independence and self-motivation, qualities for which the group has received acclaim. The ensemble is also known for its showmanship, musicianship and tight harmonies.
The concert is free to the public, although donations for the groups will be accepted if offered.
The concert will begin at noon and run about 1½ hours. Nordica Auditorium is in Merrill Hall. For more information, call 778-3513.
