LEWISTON – More than a pound of cocaine and 92 grams of heroin were seized over the weekend in a pair of unrelated busts in and around the Twin Cities.

Two New Jersey men were charged with trafficking in cocaine after police said they found 1.4 pounds of the powdered drug in their car Friday.

A day later, an Oxford man who caused a rear-end crash on the Maine Turnpike was found to be in possession of heroin.

Investigators say all of the drugs were meant for local streets.

“It’s a strictly supply and demand trade,” said Maine Drug Enforcement Supervisor Gerry Baril. “It never ends.”

On Friday, police and drug agents acting on a tip stopped an SUV as it exited the Maine Turnpike in Auburn. Inside the vehicle, police said they found a pound-and-a-quarter of coke sealed in plastic, wrapped in tape and smeared with petroleum jelly to help mask the odor.

Arrested were Michael Acipink, 31, and Michael Cervino, 33, both of Jersey City and both charged with aggravated trafficking in cocaine.

Police suspect the men are wholesale drug distributors bringing the coke to smaller dealers in Lewiston and Auburn who would then sell portions of the drug to users.

“That amount in one delivery is much greater than we normally see,” Baril said. “All we can presume is that the intended recipient or recipients service a good number of clients in the area.”

Typically, cocaine brought in from lower New England states arrives in quantities of between three and six ounces, Baril said. The value of the coke seized in that bust was estimated at $50,000.

On Saturday afternoon, police said 27-year-old Samuel George of 217 Webber Brook Road in Oxford stopped his car on the Maine Turnpike at mile 79 in Auburn and caused another driver to crash into him.

Police said George was high on heroin when he stopped abruptly in the roadway. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and police searched his car. There, Baril said, they found 92 grams of heroin in 10 plastic containers, or “fingers.” The street value of the heroin was estimated at $25,000.

Baril said it was not known where George had been traveling from or where he was going when he crashed. It was suspected he was hauling heroin from another state with the intent to bring it to Oxford.

George was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn where he remained on Monday. Acipink and Cervino also remained at the jail.
