LISBON – A 78-year-old Hallowell man was arrested at gunpoint Wednesday night after police said he pointed a loaded firearm at a Sabattus woman who had passed his car on Route 125.
Convicted drunken driver Daniel R. Davis of 2 Academy St. was charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, carrying a loaded gun in a motor vehicle and operating under the influence, police Chief David Brooks said.
The incident began on Route 125 in Bowdoin and continued into Lisbon Falls. A 34-year-old woman from Sabattus, whose name is not being released, told police she was driving south on Route 125 and had passed Davis, who was driving slowly, Brooks said.
She later noticed in her rearview mirror that he was following her so closely that she couldn’t see the front bumper of his car. Davis pulled up beside her car and pointed a handgun at her as she was making a cell phone call to police, and then he passed her, Brooks said. She provided police with a description of the car and direction of travel.
Brooks said the woman followed Davis from Route 125 over Gould Road and down Route 9 to Frost Hill Avenue. He finally pulled into the Sabattus River boat launch parking lot at the intersection of Frost Hill Avenue and Route 196.
Davis was arrested at gunpoint by Lisbon police Sgt. Scott Stewart and officer Jason St. Pierre, Brooks said. A loaded gun was found in his car.
Davis was booked at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn where he was held overnight. According to a jail spokeswoman, Davis was released Thursday afternoon on $540 bail.
Brooks said Davis’ blood level “tested very high” for alcohol and that a record check indicated he had one previous operating under the influence conviction.
Brooks commended the woman for following him and providing police with the necessary information, saying she did “a good job.”
