BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) – Investigators have cleared the police officers who chased and shot a suspect who slipped from his handcuffs and allegedly tried to escape from Barnstable District Court in February.
Investigations by State Police detectives found that officers Jeffrey Jackson and Armando Feliciano “used the appropriate amount of force necessary in the circumstances,” Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said in a statement published in the Cape Cod Times.
Anthony Roberts, 22, of Cambridge survived a single shot to the abdomen.
Roberts allegedly fled from the courthouse, where he was to face charges of receiving stolen property, then carjacked a vehicle.
As Jackson and Feliciano yelled at him to stop and began bashing in the car’s windows, Roberts allegedly rammed a van.
He then drove over bushes before Jackson shot him, causing Roberts to crash into a wall, according to court records.
Roberts was indicted earlier this month on charges including carjacking, assault and battery on a police officer and escape from a penal institution or court.
Roberts’ defense attorney, J. Drew Segadelli, said the only reason his client was indicted was to make his crime look more serious and justify the officers’ actions.
