ORONO (AP) – Maine women’s basketball legend Cindy Blodgett is on the short list of candidates for the women’s basketball head coaching vacancy at the University of Maine.

Blodgett is one of four finalists for the position, which was left open following last month’s resignation of Ann McInerny, according to Athletic Director James Blake.

The other finalists are Betsy Blose, head coach at the University of North Carolina Asheville; Marsha Frese, former associate head coach at Illinois; and Lindsay Gottlieb, an assistant at the University of California.

Blodgett is a former All-American who played for Maine from 1994 to 1998, taking the team to the NCAA tournament four times and twice leading the nation in scoring. She played in the WNBA from 1998 to 2002 and has been an assistant at Brown University the past two years.

James, who will make the final recommendation to University of Maine President Robert Kennedy, is confident the position will be filled soon.

“I’m hoping to have this search completed within the next week,” James said. “It’s always hard to tell when officially we’ll be able to move forward, but I’m hoping to move as quick as we can.”

Blodgett, Frese and Blose visited the campus last week, and Gottlieb was scheduled for a visit Monday.
