NEW GLOUCESTER – Two public safety grants were accepted by selectmen at Monday’s meeting.

The board unanimously agreed to become a host site for an AmeriCorps award to benefit the Fire Department. A full-time worker will be assigned and supervised by Chief Gary Sacco for the next year.

The worker’s duties include responding to emergencies, recruiting volunteers for the town, seeking opportunities to expedite the delivery of public safety education and developing written materials for community programs. The worker will have basic computer skills and possible certification as a firefighter I and emergency medical technician.

The grant awards the worker $10,900 through AmeriCorps plus an educational award of $4,725 at the end of service. New Gloucester will pay $8,300 toward the worker’s salary.

Selectmen say this will help grow the department.

A Safety Enhancement Grant of $3,112 was awarded through Maine Municipal Association for safety vests, reflective cones, lighted hand-held safety signs and a traffic sign and stand.

Selectmen agreed to authorize the town manager to apply for Federal Emergency Management Assistance funds for the St. Patrick’s Day snowstorm and pay for damage and repair caused by the Patriot’s Day rainstorm.

Finally, selectmen adopted the National Incident Management System after a training session held last week for all town officials and workers. The program is part of Homeland Security directive to provide a nationwide consistent approach for all government organizations to work together more effectively and efficiently.
