FARMINGTON – The United Way of the Tri-Valley Area is accepting donations for the Adam Bennett family. Bennett, an electrician for SW&B in Jay, was critically injured in car accident last week. He remains in a coma at Central Maine Medical Center, said Nancy Morgan, executive director of the United Way.

Bennett, 29, of Corinna, was on his way home from work May 14, after finishing a night shift when his pickup collided with an unloaded tractor-trailer. He was traveling east on Macomber Hill Road and failed to yield at the intersection with Route 133.

He suffered head and internal injuries when he was thrown about 30 feet from his truck after it went into the southbound ditch on Route 133.

He is the father of two, a 5-year-old boy with special needs and a 3-year-old girl, Morgan said. His wife, Becky, is a stay-at-home mom, she said. His wife and mother are staying near Bennett at the Harbor House, while the children are staying with their grandmother.

While Bennett has health insurance to cover medical costs, she said, he does not have disability insurance. He lost clothes and his glasses in the accident and his insulin pump was destroyed.

Morgan was approached by Bennett’s coworkers at Verso Paper, with whom she had worked on United Way campaigns, and asked if there was any way the United Way could help. She said the United Way does not have that kind of funding, but she was willing to start taking donations on the family’s behalf.

“Adam has a long recovery facing him and the family needs our help,” she said. “Anyone who would like to make a tax-deductible donation to the Bennett family may do so through the United Way. No processing fees will be taken from any money collected for the family, and checks made out to the United Way will be considered tax deductible.”
