Two years ago my grandmother made me a Princess Leia costume for Halloween.

It’s the last costume she’ll ever make me (age and dignity prevent asking for another) and was, all modesty aside, stunning, topped with picture-perfect buns that the women at Shear Expressions toiled over with bobby pins, hair spray and dish scrubby pads for more than an hour.

“Star Wars” inspires that sort of fanaticism.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of that movie-turned-pop-culture icon, we asked readers to share “Star Wars” memories.

We heard from people here and, maybe not surprisingly, far, far away.

“I was going away for the summer (in 1977) and my mom and grandmom decided to take my sister and I to see ‘Star Wars.’ When we got to the theater, my grandmother forgot to shut off the car and then we locked all the doors. My mom and grandmom waited for the police to unlock the doors so gram could shut off the car. We had a great laugh over this after the movie and when we remember it today.

My best memory of the movie was enjoying it with the women in my family. Girls’ day out. I also remember having a huge crush on Mark Hamill at the time. Was totally amazed by the special effects. Back then that was the best we had.”

“My favorite one is the third one, ‘Revenge of the Sith.’ I thought that was the best movie they did. Better special effects, better story line, and I hope they make a seven, eight and nine. I’d definitely love to see it.” -Brian Malmquist, Lewiston

“When the new series of movies came out, my wife and I were there for the midnight showings. And after my daughter was born, I joined the Rebel Legion, a costuming group for the good guys in the ‘Star Wars’ universe. As my daughter has become older (she is 4!), she has become a fan in her own right! Maisie, my daughter, has seen all the movies and also loves to dress up as Yoda, and goes to events with us.

My love for the original movies led me to make my first costume, an X-wing pilot, and this year I am working on my first Jedi, Ki-Adi-Mundi.”
