BANGOR (AP) – While others were enjoying the holiday weekend, a team of firefighters from the Maine Forest Service departed Saturday to battle a wildlife in Quebec.

The 21-member team will help battle a fire that has destroyed 10,000 acres of woodland approximately 350 miles northwest of Quebec City, said Kent Nelson, fire prevention specialist from the Maine Forest Service.

The leader of the team, Todd Weeks, left on a plane from Bangor with a third of the team members, Nelson said. From there, they picked up the remainder of the team in Presque Isle before continuing northward, he said.

The crew was sent as part of the agreement between members of the Northeastern Forest Fire Protection Commission.

The compact covers the New England states and New Brunswick, Quebec and Nova Scotia in Canada.
