FARMINGTON – Elizabeth “Betty” Deering Smith Linke, 85, of Rangeley, died Thursday, May 24, at Franklin Memorial Hospital.
She was born Feb. 20, 1922, in Nashua, N.H., the daughter of Dr. Deering Greeley and Mary Stevens (Hamblett) Smith. She graduated from Nashua, N.H., schools and in 1943 earned her BS degree in dietetics from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
On June 20, 1964, she married Charles H. Linke. He predeceased her in 1989.
She was an assistant dietitian at Skidmore College and later at Yale University, New Haven, Conn., and was a dietitian in the New Haven public school system.
She was a member of the Trumbull Chapter 83 OES and the Golden Rod Chapter 34 OES. She was a member of the Rangeley Congregational Church, the Rangeley Lakes Garden Club, the American Dietetic Assoc., and was a member and past president of the Connecticut School Food Service Assoc. She retired in 1969, and moved to Rangeley in 1970.
Since 1990, Betty trained as a hospice volunteer with Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice in Franklin County. In December 1992, she was the recipient of the Robert E. Turcotte Award for outstanding service. She was well-recognized in the New Haven and Rangeley areas for her photography talents and her love for wildlife and nature. She also created many beautiful wedding and specialty cakes that led to teaching cake-decorating classes in Connecticut and Rangeley.
She is survived by a stepson, Charles H. Linke Jr., and his wife, Ingrid, of Connecticut; a stepdaughter, Margaret K. Vernon, and her husband, David, of Texas; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a stepmother, Helen K. Smith; her husband, Charles in 1989; two stepdaughters, Gail K. Boyd and Dorothy Linke Heinig; and her twin brother, Robert G. Smith.
