EXETER, N.H. (AP) – New Hampshire’s Emergency Management Agency says mild earthquakes shook the state’s Seacoast area Saturday and Sunday, rattling a lot of wall photos and cupboard items, but not causing injuries or property damage.
Many residents called police to report hearing explosions and authorities were trying to figure out just what happened. They initially said the blasts might have been underground methane explosions.
The U.S. Geological Web Site reported a 1.9 magnitude earthquake 7 miles southwest of Portsmouth on Saturday at 7:56 p.m. By 10:30 p.m., Emergency Management reported a 1.4 magnitude earthquake, centered about a mile and a half north of Exeter. On Sunday at 2:35 p.m., Portsmouth Emergency Dispatch again received numerous 911 calls from the same area, reporting a loud bang followed by the earth shaking briefly. Authorities treated this as an earthquake, too.
