GREENWOOD – A plan to build a 12-dock marina on Round Pond was put on hold Monday because the Planning Board wants more public input.
But some planners said they saw no clear reason to prohibit the project put forward by Donald Lawrence.
The docks would be rented to local people, Lawrence told the board.
Those at the public hearing raised concerns about the aesthetic and ecological impact the marina might have on the pond, which is next to Route 26 in the village of Locke Mills. Soil erosion near and around the proposed-marina was also a concern raised Monday.
No one said they were outright opposed to the project but rather wanted to ensure the environment of the lake was protected.
Lawrence said the project was for only the 12 docks and a small parking lot. Any future expansion would require additional approval, he said. In addition, he said, the plans would be adhered to strictly, with no additional structures built or services offered.
“Basically,” Lawrence said, “all it is, is a waterborne parking lot.”
Ecological and social concerns were addressed by Lawrence, as well as by board members and some residents. According to Lawrence, environmental agencies such as the Department of Environmental Protection had no objection to the plans. Regarding possible lake traffic increase, residents were divided. However, the general consensus by the board was that the potential users of the docks were local people, and therefore little increase in traffic would occur.
Some concerns persisted, however. Questions were posed as to potential theft of, or siphoning of gas from a motorboat. The board thought the town constable would see to any problems on the docks as he does anywhere in town.
Asked if the site had been officially viewed by the board, members admitted it had not, though most said they had seen the site at least once and saw nothing which would prevent the docks from being built.
At 7 p.m., a previously scheduled town meeting was held in which the issue was again discussed. The board decided to postpone voting on issuing Lawrence a permit until the next meeting after documenting Monday night’s hearing.
