Grange honors couple for service

NEW GLOUCESTER – Sabbathday Lake Grange has awarded its annual Community Citizen Award to Howard and Eileen Stiles of Raymond for all that they have done for the town of Raymond.

Howard was chairman of the Raymond Veterans Memorial Committee, which had the task of creating a memorial for the town to honor residents of Raymond who have served their country in times of war and peace.

Eileen, who is also called the Flag Lady, takes care of all of the U.S. flags that adorn the light posts in Raymond. Not only does she makes sure that flags are put up in the spring and taken down in the fall, she also mends and cleans all of the flags when they are not being displayed in the winter.

Both spoke to Grange members about their projects at a recent meeting. They were then escorted to the altar and were presented the award by Grange Master Steven Haycock.

Haycock remarked that the grange is a community service organization, which every year looks to other members of the communities to honor for their contributions.
