JAY – George Vernon Brown Jr., 40, of Jay, a wonderful father, husband, son, brother and friend, died unexpectedly Thursday, June 7, in Jay.

He was born March 17, 1967, in Portsmouth, Va., the son of George Vernon and Susan (Trail) Brown Sr. He was a 1985 graduate of Mt. Blue High School and on Oct. 18, 1986, married Leigh Ann Therrien at the North Livermore Baptist Church.

He was employed as a foreman for Lucas Tree Co. for 14 years. He later worked for the town of Jay for five years, working in the transfer station, as a bus driver and custodian for the school department and also the highway department.

He had been employed for 2 years at Verso Paper Co. as an area safety representative.

George was a registered arborist for 21 years and owned Top of the Line Tree Co. He was a very hard worker and was never satisfied with less than perfection. George will also be remembered as “Down Town George Brown,” driving No. 40 at Oxford Plains Speedway for seven years.

He was a volunteer fireman with the Jay Fire Department for many years and was currently assistant chief. He also was a former AYS Coach. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, especially Jay High School football and basketball, ATVs, snow machines and NASCAR.

He is survived by his wife, Leigh, and their sons, Jacob and Geordan, all of Jay; his parents, George and Susan Brown Sr. of Farmington; sisters, Sandra Hutchinson and her husband, Randy, of New Sharon, Pennie Schinzel and her husband, Keith, of New Sharon, and Lisa Brown and friend, Chris Marquis, of Farmington; brother, Danny Brown and his wife, Angela, of Kingfield; mother and father-in-law, C. Russell and Patricia Kilkenny of Jay; sister-in-law, Sherri Couture and her husband, Richard, of Jay; nieces and nephews, Ryan, Randy, Ashley, Christian, Hunter, Krista, Susan, Skylah, Shaylyn, Jessica, Jason, Devon, Jenessa, Jonah, Brooklyn, Danny, Jas, Shannon, Cole, Griffin, Max and Casidee; and many, many special friends.

He was predeceased by his wife’s stepfather, John Mastine.
