WOOLWICH (AP) – A 35-year-old Brunswick man underwent surgery in a Lewiston hospital after being shot in the stomach Sunday morning during an early morning altercation, authorities said.

Daniel Wright was shot by Matthew Tainter, 22, around 4 a.m. in Tainter’s apartment, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Wright was transported to Mid Coast Hospital before being airlifted to Central Maine Medical Center.

Tainter, the grandson of the late Sagadahoc County Sheriff Arthur Tainter, was being questioned by investigators but has not been charged, McCausland said.

Wright, Tainter and Tainter’s girlfriend were in the apartment when the altercation broke out and Tainter shot Wright with a handgun, the spokesman said. Tainter then dialed 911.

Sagadahoc sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene and called in state police.

The two agencies are conducting a joint investigation of the incident.
