AUBURN – A Lewiston man is expected to go to trial Tuesday in connection with the armed robbery last year of a Big Apple Store in Lewiston.
Vinson Mangos, 33, remains in Androscoggin County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.
Mangos was indicted by an Androscoggin County grand jury on a charge of robbery. He pleaded not guilty.
Police said Mangos robbed a Big Apple Store on Lisbon Street at 3:45 a.m. in April 2006. A store clerk said a man matching Mangos’ description held up the store at knife point, demanding money from the register and safe. The robber got away with $350, police Detective Brian O’Malley wrote in a sworn affidavit filed at Androscoggin County Superior Court.
The clerk later picked Mangos out of a photo lineup. “Without a doubt,” the clerk said, referring to Mangos.
When officers arrived at the scene, they didn’t see Mangos, but recovered a bandanna and shirt the robber had apparently used in seeking to conceal his identity, O’Malley wrote.
The clerk told police he had been waiting on other customers when a man came in, walked behind the counter and pushed the clerk against it, demanding money, O’Malley wrote. The clerk said he pushed the man back, refusing to give him any money. The clothing the man had over his face fell down and the clerk could see his face clearly.
The man produced a folding knife and pushed it into the clerk’s ribs, demanding money again, O’Malley wrote. The clerk complied by opening the register. The man took that money then told the clerk to open the store’s safe and started counting backward from 10. The clerk opened the safe and the man took cash from it before fleeing.
State officials analyzed the clothing left at the scene. They matched DNA found on the clothing to Mangos, who had been in an FBI national DNA database, O’Malley wrote.
Mangos’ attorney, Robert Ruffner of Portland, filed a motion for the court to pay for a DNA expert because Mangos’ defense is subsidized by the state.
Last month, prosecutors revealed a new eyewitness to the alleged crime. A judge approved additional money for Mangos to hire a private investigator to learn more about the new witness.
A jury was selected for the trial last month.
