LEWISTON – A dozen people were rousted from their homes Friday night after an unidentified caller reported a bomb was set to explode at 40 Maple St.
No bomb was found by police and fire crews who searched the building for a half-hour. Tenants, some of them older people in nightclothes, huddled across the street lamenting the disruption of their evening.
“We were watching a movie, and it was starting to get really good,” said 38-year-old Ted LeClair, who had been visiting his twin brother Todd. “I was getting into it. Then the cops came up and told us to get out, there had been a bomb threat.”
The woman who received the threatening phone call about 7:15 p.m. said a female caller had told her only that there was a bomb inside the building and that it would soon explode. Then she hung up.
“This woman says she doesn’t have any enemies, and her phone number is unlisted,” police Lt. Michael Mc-Gonagle said. “We’re pretty sure it’s a crank call, but we need to make sure.”
After confirming that all occupants were out of the building, police asked the tenants for permission to search their homes
“I don’t have a problem with that,” said one woman, who was slumped in a lawn chair across the street. “I don’t have anything to hide.”
Fire Capt. Victor Gaudreau said his crew searched each apartment and other parts of the seven-unit building at the corner of Maple and Park streets.
“You want to err on the side of caution,” he said.
The tenants were allowed back in their homes about 7:45 p.m. Police were investigating the incident and trying to track down the source of the threatening phone call.
LeClair, who had been watching the action movie “The Cave,” went back inside without much enthusiasm.
“I imagine the movie is just about done by now,” he said.
