FARMINGTON – Special guest at the June potluck supper/meeting of Farmington Emblem Club 460 was Richard Knight, husband of deceased Farmington Emblem Club member, Sandra Knight. Sandy was selected as this year’s Member of the Year.
Sandy died a few days before she would have known of the honor. Richard presented the club with a quilt that Sandy was planning to sell for the club as a money raiser as the club’s first vice president.
The meeting was called to order by President Nancy Chase at 7 p.m. There were 33 members present, 68 absent and one deceased, for a total membership of 101.
Jean Corcoran, scholarship chairwoman, reported on the club’s choices of scholarship recipients for this year. Alexis Alexander was chosen from Mt. Blue High School. There were two chosen from Mt. Abram High School, Kurt Phillips and Dustin Eustis. The roving scholarship went to Erica Webster and the Noreen Pillsbury Emblem scholarship to Deven Ferrara.
The Father’s Day breakfast will be held at the West Farmington Elks Lodge on Sunday, June 17, sponsored by the Farmington Emblem Club 460. Volunteers from the club signed up to help.
On Aug. 11, the club’s annual lawn sale will be held at the home of Kamilla Hall. Volunteers will help her with that event.
Literacy Chairwoman Diana Oliver reported that 21 paperbacks and 22 hardcover books has been donated to a library. Emblem Club volunteers will help at the Elks Youth Fest on Aug. 24 in Augusta.
Sign-up sheets were available for members to select times for helping at the Farmington Fair Elk and Emblem food booth. They will work as waitresses or in the kitchen. Heading the event is member Sylvia Richards. Turkeys will be “picked” at the Elks Lodge by Emblem members on Aug. 22 and 23. The meat will be frozen in preparation for the fair booth’s hot turkey sandwiches.
The club will present a flag-folding ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 14, at Sandy River Nursing Center. Volunteers from the club will hold a ceremony at Girls State in Bangor. They will also do a ceremony at the Wilton Blueberry Festival on Friday, Aug. 3, at the Nichols building in Wilton. Claudette Merchant will be in charge of signing up and lining up the children and their bikes and doll carriages at the festival parade on Saturday, Aug. 4.
On Sunday, July 15, Shannon Smith will host a potluck outing at her campsite at Dummer’s Beach in Weld. The event will start at 11 a.m. and will include a ride on the lake in a party boat. A donation will be made to a family whose son was injured in Iraq.
The June 50-50 raffle was won by Sylvia Richards and the mystery gift by Lois Barker. The next meeting of Farmington Emblem Club 460 will be held on Thursday, Sept. 6.
