FAYETTE – Four community members were awarded plaques Saturday at the town meeting for contributions they have made to the community.

Town Manager Mark Robinson gave awards to Selectman Thomas Mitchell; ballot clerk and School Committee Vice Chairman Elaine Wilcox; Selectmen Chairman Berndt Graf and Arthur LeMay.

The results of the election held earlier in the week were reported, with Mary Wright and Gerald Mitchell winning three-year terms as selectmen.

Voters also elected James Wright to serve a three-year term on the School Committee.

Before the meeting began Saturday, a moment of silence was held to remember Abby Holman, former selectmen vice chairman and a state representative, who died in a skiing accident last winter at Sugarloaf. The annual town report is dedicated to her.

Residents spent time debating four articles, one of which required a secret ballot vote, to set aside school surplus money of more than $200,000 in anticipation of the pending consolidation of school districts. Residents then voted to reduce the amount of money for public education by $200,000, which would be used to cover any unforeseen costs associated with consolidation.

In the secret ballot, residents voted to appropriate more than $185,000 in additional local funds, which exceeds the state’s Essential Program and Services allocation. The vote result was 48 to 12. Each of the four articles relating to the school surplus were approved.

Residents voted to consolidate balances in the town’s surplus fund in order to keep the tax requirement the same this year as it was last year – $1,534,114.
