I am writing to urge all Mainers to get behind and support LD 1925, the tax reform plan currently being debated in the Legislature. I believe this plan adds revenue stability to our state, while at the same time easing the tax burden on almost all of Maine residents. The Brookings Institution report has called Maine a cheap date, and we will not lose tourists by adding to the meals and lodging tax, or by broadening the sales tax base to include the service economy.

According to an overwhelming number of the members of the Taxation Committee, the state can easily save almost every taxpayer in Maine hundreds of dollars from the additional contributions from tourists. While the plan may sound regressive at first glance, with the targeted property tax relief and refundable income tax credits included in it, it is in reality a progressive plan overall.

LD 1925 has the endorsement of the Maine Municipal Association, Maine Firefighters, Maine Economic Policy Center, AARP, GrowSmart Maine, plus many others.

I urge legislators to vote for LD 1925.
