MILTON, N.H. (AP) – This is not a story of good Samaritans gladly returning someone else’s money.

Police say a business owner is missing hundreds of dollars after a wallet full of cash fell off his car and money blew away.

Police say two witnesses returned some money, but others scooped up cash and took off.

Investigators say they will give those who took money a chance to return it, but will go after them if money is not turned in.

“We’re giving them the option to return the money – a chance to do the right thing – before we do anything,” said Police Chief Mark McGowan.

McGowan said a downtown business owner drove away with his wallet, containing more than $1,000, on his car roof. About $300 was returned.

McGowan says officers have collected license plate numbers of some cars that were in the area when the cash was blowing around and are prepared to review surveillance video from nearby businesses.

He says people who don’t return the money could be charged with stealing lost or mislaid property.
