NEW YORK (AP) – A firefighter fell from a rooftop while tackling a blaze apparently caused by a burning cigarette on Thursday and died at a hospital.
The 23-year-old firefighter, Daniel Tudjak of Queens, was screaming while he tumbled four stories to the ground, witnesses said. He suffered serious head injuries, the fire department said.
The fire was reported shortly before 5 p.m. at a brick building used by artists in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn. The building was erected in 1920, property records show.
More than 60 firefighters from 12 units were on the scene.
