SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Rookie Nate Schierholtz ended San Francisco’s season-long eight-game losing streak with a two-out RBI single in the 13th inning, giving the Giants a 6-5 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday.

The Giants had to rally from an early three-run deficit and overcome Alex Rodriguez’s game-tying home run in the ninth inning before getting their first win since June 12.

Ryan Klesko started the winning rally with a single against Scott Proctor (1-4) and moved to second base on Bengie Molina’s sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Omar Vizquel reached on an infield single to bring up Schierholtz, who blooped a single in front of center fielder Melky Cabrera. The Giants poured out of the dugout and mobbed Schierholtz on the infield.

Vinnie Chulk (2-2), San Francisco’s seventh pitcher, threw a hitless inning for the win.

The Yankees had a chance to win it in the 11th when they loaded the bases with one out against Steve Kline. But Hideki Matsui struck out on three pitches and Robinson Cano grounded out to end the threat.

That helped the Giants hand the Yankees their fourth loss in five games and overcome another big game from Rodriguez. A-Rod hit his major league-leading 28th homer in the ninth inning against Brad Hennessey and had four hits for the second straight game, improving his average to .656 (21-for-32) in eight career games in San Francisco.

Barry Bonds gave the Giants a 5-4 lead in the seventh when he walked with the bases loaded against Brian Bruney. Bonds also hit an RBI single in the sixth and remained at 749 career home runs – six shy of tying Hank Aaron’s career record of 755.

New York looked to be on its way to a second straight win in the series when Chien-Ming Wang took a 4-2 lead into the seventh. Pedro Feliz drew the Giants within one with his 100th career homer – the first allowed by Wang all season to a right-handed hitter.

Wang was replaced by Mike Myers after Omar Vizquel singled with one out. The Giants loaded the bases with two outs for Bonds against the hard-throwing Bruney. Using a hard fastball that reached 96 mph, Bruney got in front of Bonds 1-2 before missing with three straight balls to give the Giants a 5-4 lead. That was San Francisco’s first lead at the end of an inning since June 12 against Toronto.

Rodriguez singled and scored in a three-run third inning against Matt Morris and then singled and scored again in the fifth to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead.

The Giants got one run back in the sixth, when they lost manager Bruce Bochy to his second ejection in three games. Bochy came out to argue after Ray Durham was called out on a close play at first base.

. Durham hit a grounder off Wang’s glove to shortstop Derek Jeter. The throw beat Durham but replays appeared to show that Miguel Cairo’s foot was off the bag.

Bonds followed with an RBI single to cut New York’s lead to 4-2, but Wang got out of the inning without further damage.

Wang allowed four runs and six hits in 6 1-3 innings, getting his first no-decision in 12 starts this season. He walked two and did not strike out a batter after recording a career-high 10 in his last start against the New York Mets.

Morris allowed four runs and 13 hits in 5 2-3 innings, matching the most hits he has allowed in any start in his career.

Notes: Jeter doubled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. He has also hit in 25 straight interleague games. He left the game in the eighth inning with a slight left hip strain and is day-to-day. … Cabrera had to be tended to by trainer Steve Donohue for the second straight day after fouling a ball off his lower right leg. A teammate offered Cabrera a shin guard when he returned to the dugout. … Morris also allowed 13 hits in a game on Sept. 11, 1998, in an 8-2 loss at Houston. … Yankees OF Johnny Damon, slowed by a strained abdominal muscle, grounded out as a pinch-hitter in the eighth.
