CHICAGO – DeLisha Milton-Jones scored 22 points and the Washington Mystics defeated the Chicago Sky 99-86 on Saturday night.
Alana Beard scored 17 points, Nikki Teasley had 15 and Nakia Sanford added 13 for the Mystics (3-10), who have won three of five after starting the season 0-8. Monique Currie, who was traded by the Sky to Washington on May 24 for Chasity Melvin, added 14 for the Mystics.
Candice Dupree scored 26, and Chasity Melvin added 14 points and 9 rebounds for Chicago (6-7), which had won two of three. Armintie Price had 11 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists for the Sky.
Stacey Dales added 12 points.
Dominique Canty, the Sky’s second-leading scorer at 10.9 points per game, hurt her ankle late in the first half and was helped off the floor at halftime. She did not return to the game.
Nikki Blue’s buzzer-beating layup gave the Mystics a 46-36 halftime lead.
Washington extended its lead to 39-27 on back-to-back 3’s by Coco Miller and Milton-Jones with 3:29 left in the second.
The Mystics opened the second quarter on a 11-2 run capped by Milton-Jones’ three-pointer to take a 33-22 lead with 6:59 left.
Beard had seven points during a 11-3 run that gave Washington a 67-54 lead with 1:23 left in the third quarter.
A pair of fourth-quarter free throws by Milton-Jones gave Washington its biggest lead of the night at 78-59 with 8:18 remaining.
Stephanie Raymond hit a three-pointer with 4:07 left in the game that cut the Sky’s deficit to 82-74, but Milton-Jones hit a layup eight seconds later to increase Washington’s lead to 10.
