WILTON – The Police Department has been given authority to investigate cases involving juveniles again, Chief Dennis Brown announced at the annual town meeting.
District Attorney Norm Croteau and Assistant District Attorney Andrew Robinson met with Brown recently, Robinson said Friday. After discussing the personnel that has been hired for the department and how investigations would be conducted, Croteau withdrew the memorandum that barred the department from juvenile case investigations.
Earlier this year, Croteau ordered the department to turn over all criminal investigations involving juvenile victims to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department. The order came after he had met with town officials to bring to their attention several problematic investigations handled by three former town officers.
Croteau said earlier that a number of reports completed by the officers were so poorly done that prosecutors were limited in their ability to obtain convictions on some crimes.
In announcing that the order had been lifted, Brown said the district attorney felt confident about the new officers’ ability to investigate the cases.
“The chief has taken steps to improve the situation,” Robinson said, “and the department has shown they are not afraid to ask for help from other departments.”
