Lawrence Sirois campaigned on tax reform, which was where he tried to have an impact this session.
Sirois successfully pushed legislation directing the Bureau of Revenue Services to study motor vehicle excise taxes this summer and make suggestions to the Legislature next year on ideas to lower the cost.
As a freshman representative, Sirois submitted bills – both failing – to adjust permit fees handled by the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Department and increase the homestead exemption.
He supported the tax reform bill, which, among other things, sought to decrease income taxes and expand the sales tax to more goods and services. The contentious bill failed in the Senate at the end of the session.
Sirois also said he fought to decrease state spending through his role on the State and Local Government Committee. He supported a bill to decrease the size of the Legislature by 7 percent.
“We’ve got to do what we expect others to do,” he said.
